Work Package Creation

As a starting point for Work Package creation, isolate a construction work area or turnover system to narrow the selection criteria.

  • There are three types of work packages you can create: Construction Work Package (CWP), Installation Work Package (IWP) and Test Work Package (TWP).

  • Work Packages are defined by discipline (such as Pipe or Steel) and activity type (such as Install or Test).

  • The definition of discipline and activity types available to a Work Package is a project-specific configuration.

  • A component cannot reside in more than one Work Package of the same activity type. However, a component can reside in two different types of Work Packages. For example, it could be part of both an Install Pack and a Test Pack.

  • It is best to follow the construction path when creating Work Packages, as this helps when sequencing and scheduling the work.

When creating a work package, different colors are assigned to the components in the VCM:

  • Purple – These components are in the Work Package and are being worked on presently.

  • Blue – These components already reside in a Work Package. A Component can only reside in one Work Package of the same type.

  • Green – These components have tasks associated to them and are ready to be added to a Work Package.

  • Gray – These components have no tasks available and cannot be added to a Work Package.

Use a consistent naming convention for the work packages across the entire project. The name should include some indication of what type of package it is. It should also include the type of construction work area or turnover system of which the Work Package is a part. The name should contain a number that represents the sequence of a package within the respective construction work area or turnover system. The numbering sequence should provide a general guide line as to the path of construction. It is not recommended that a project iteratively rename the Work Packages based upon re-sequencing during the Lookahead process.

You use the <work package> - New dialog to create a new work package, after you chose the type of work package, the Discipline and the Activity Type.

If you have a steel work package, on the right-click menu, you have an option to Edit Steel Hanglist. Clicking this option opens the Edit Steel Hanglist dialog, which is used to specify the order in which components in the steel work package are to be installed.
